Drawing on over 20 years of teaching Compensation and Benefits, I have now written an “essentials” textbook currently in its First Edition at Cognella.

Developing and managing a total compensation systemn (2023).

This is a short (“essentials”) textbook on compensation. It mostly focuses on how to develop and manage monetary compensation (base pay, bonuses), but also includes some content on employee benefits.

The unique features of the book include:

·         An “essentials” format, covering only the foundational basics of a topic. Each chapter only covers 4-5 learning objectives. This allows for shorter, more focused chapters that students are more likely to read. These chapters introduce students to basic concepts that can be elaborated via class lectures or activities, and/or with supplemental readings or other assignments.

·         A coherent and over-arching model that acts as the organizing framework for the text, allowing students to readily grasp how the topic being covered fits into the big picture.

·         Chapters that are organized with section headings that correspond to specific learning objectives. This allows students to connect a section of text to what they need to take away from it. It also serves as a convenient reference tool, so students can find that information again more easily.

·         A special chapter on how to implement and evaluate a compensation system. I have not seen this content in other compensation textbooks, and I believe it is important enough to warrant its own chapter.

Compensation textbooks tend to be long and cluttered with many examples, caption boxes, and other material that goes beyond the basics. My goal was to produce a more student-friendly text that is brief and easy to read.
